New azulene quadratic acid syestuffs (I); and New 4-alkyl- and 4-di-substd. phosphonylmethyl-azulene derivs. (II) are claimed. R1 = 1-12C alkyl (opt. substd. by halogen, amino, OH, 1-12C alkoxy, (substd.) phenyl, COOH, 1-12C (halo)-alkoxycarbonyl, 1-12C phenylalkoxycarbonyl, CN, 1-12C alkanoyloxy, (substd.) benzoyloxy and/or a di-substd. phosphonyl gp. of the formula PO2(R6)(R7) with R6 and R7 each = 1-4C alkyl or Ph), COOH, 1-12C alkoxycarbonyl (opt. with one or more O atoms in the alkyl chain), carbamoyl or 1-4C mono- or dialkylcarbamoyl; R2-5 each = H or 1-12C alkyl, substd. by halogen, amino, 1-12C alkoxy, (substd.) phenyl, COOH, 1-12C alkoxycarbonyl or CN; if R5 = H, the positions of the CH2-R1 and R4 substits. in one or both azulene rings can be interchanged; and R1 can also = H of R5 = methyl or ethyl with a (substd.) phenyl substit., 3-12C alkyl or at least one of R2 and R4 = (substd.) phenyl.
