The invention starts from a process for the removal or diminution of halogenated aromatic compounds, in particular polychlorinated phenols or polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls from exhaust gases of incineration plants for waste or special waste by thermal treatment at temperatures between 300@C and 700@C in the presence of an iron oxide-containing catalyst. The process according to the invention has the advantage that, with simultaneous decrease of the NOx contents, even highly toxic halogenated aromatic compounds, in particular PCBs can be removed from exhaust gases of incineration plants for waste or special waste.
