An evaluation of an engineering or biological process or system can be made by treating the system with an isotopically-enriched substance which flows through the system intact or which is changed into another substance containing isotope-enrichment, and a gaseous sample thereof is analyzed at low pressure e.g. by infra-red spectroscopy to measure the intensity of a specific absorption line of the enriched isotopic species whereby the concentration of the species is calculated. The enrichment of the measured species furnishes information about the functioning of the process. In bio-medical testing, the tracer isotopic species used frequently are enriched values of CO, CO2, H2O or NH3 in the breath or derived from tissues or other specimens.
