Safety apparatus for vehicle passengers which restrains the forward movement of lower limbs on impact by positioning an energy absorbing pliable pad (2) in close proximity to the knees. The kneepad (2) is constrained to move in the same direction (A) as the axis of the upper leg by guides (31,32) fixed to the vehicle bodywork (12). A piston damper (8,9) with autocontrolled throttle valve (10) provides variable shock cushioning w.r.t. passenger weight. Passenger differences are accounted for by a seat position sensor ( 6) and a weight sensor (15). The sensor (16) automatically adjusts kneepad (2) clearance via a motor (5) driven screw (4). All variables are supervised by the system controller (18).
