PURPOSE: To obtain dimethyl ether a high conversion ratio with a prolonged catalyst life while maintaining a stabilized temperature by reacting a synthesis gas in the presence of a methanol synthesis component and a dehydration component in a liquid medium in a three phase reactor system. ;CONSTITUTION: By using a solid catalyst system comprising a methanol synthesis component (e.g. copper) and a dehydration (ether forming) component (e.g. alumina, silica alumina, a solid acid), in the presence of a single catalyst or a mixture of a plurality of catalysts in a liquid medium in a three phase (liquid phase) reactor system at a pressure of 200-2,000 psig, preferably 400-1,000 psig at a temperature of 200-350°C, preferably 225-300°C, a synthesis gas is contacted and reacted while maintaining the minimum effective methanol rate at 1.0 g mol or more of methanol per hour per 1 kg of catalyst. The reaction is carried out either in a suspended foaming bed using shaped pellets or a suspended bed using a powder catalyst having a particle size of not greater than 200 microns.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
