Weak acid type cation exchange resins are prepared by subjecting to caustic hydrolysis a copolymer comprising in polymerized form a major amount of an acrylate monomer which is hydrolyzable under caustic conditions; a minor amount of an acrylate monomer which has a less hydrolyzable character than the hydrolyzable monomer, and an effective amount of a crosslinking monomer.
