The missile or aircraft guidance method uses a pulsed laser transmitter and receiver combined with a goniometer, a retroreflector (4) being attached to the rear of the missile (3). The reflectred laser radiation is evaluated to determine the range and its deviation from the required flight path. A timing gate is programmed in dependence on the known missile velocity characteristic. The first echo signal within the timing gate is used to determine the position of the missile relative to the line of sight. The signals for one or more laser pulses in the distance range behind the missile are identified as fault signals and are eliminated from the evaluation. ADVANTAGE - Prevents false range and position indication from false reflections obtained from range between ground station and missile.
