For economical thermal disposal of waste materials or residues containing elements polluting the environment, such as, for example, discharged ashes, sewage sludge or the like, without having first to comminute and/or to dry the materials to be disposed of, it is proposed according to the invention to charge the waste materials or residues (10) onto the surface (13) of molten slag (14) in an open-hearth furnace (15) and to melt them, to burn the carbon contained in the materials by top-blowing an O2-containing gas (16) to form a reducing atmosphere in which oxidic components such as zinc and/or lead are reductively volatilised, maintaining the exit gas for at least two seconds at a temperature of at least 800 DEG C or at least 1200 DEG C and to carry out further combustion with feeding a further O2-containing gas (20) with a precipitation of zinc and/or lead in the form of dust.
