Firing of electrode rods to form graphite - uses metal tube with preforms pushed steadily along while surrounded by hot gas

Firing of electrode rods, which comprise carbonaceous filler and binder and which can safely contact each other, is carried out in a long, gas-tight firing furnace tube (1), pref. with a metal wall (105), esp. steel. The rods (22-45) fit inside the tube leaving open space. The tube has a continuous, straight and smooth sliding surface (142,123,143) along which the rods are slid. There is an entry-lock (2,11,200) at one end of the tube and an exit-lock (160) at the other end. A push-rod (200) is used to move the rods along and is fitted at the entry of the tube. There are hot gas supply (46-53) and exhaust pipes (54-61) which are connected at several places with the firing tube. USE/ADVANTAGE - Furnace can operate continuously using single supply of hot gas and controlling the temps. of the different sections by restricting valves using temp. readings from probes in various places and evaluating these against a set schedule by a controller (10).
