An internal combustion engine, of the type which compresses a mixture fo air and fuel, has three inlet valves (12, 13, 14) per cylinder (1) to (8). The first (12) and third (14) inlet valves are connected to a common inlet manifold (27) whilst the second inlet valves are connected to the manifolds (30, 31). The throttle valve (24, 25) is fitted in each duct (15) which connects a first (12) or third valve (14) to the manifold (27). These throttle valves (24, 25) are so controlled that they are held closed at low engine speed and are open at speeds above the middle of the range of engine speed. The valves (12, 13, 14) are so positioned that the third type (13) is between the first and third type valves (12, 14). USE - Internal combustion engines.
