PURPOSE:To obtain an Al-rare earth element alloy plating bath for electroplating by incorporated specified amts. of an aluminum halide, rare earth element halide and alkylpyridinium halide. CONSTITUTION:The Al-rare earth element alloy electroplating bath is prepared by mixing 33-67mol% of an aluminum halide, 0.01-67mol% of a rare earth element halide, and 33-67mol% of a halogenated alkylpyridinium or an alkylimidasolium (wherein both compds. have an alkyl group of 1-12 carbon number), and, if necessary, by adding an aromatic org. solvent. Plating is performed with using this plating bath at 25-180 deg.C bath temp., 0.01-100A/dm2 current density in a DC pulse current. Thereby, plating of an Al-rare earth element alloy containing about 0.1-80% rare earth element can be performed.
