Purified sciatic nerve ciliary neurotrophic factor - and recombinant CNTF, useful for reducing damage to nervous system caused by disease or injury

Purified protein sciatic nerve ciliary neurotrophic factor (SN-CNTF) (I), which has a specific activity greater than 25,000 times that of the natural sciatic nerve extract, is new. (I) pref. has an activity of greater than 2 x 10 power(8) TU/mg. Also claimed are: purified rabbit SN-CNTF (Ir), its aminoacid sequence and corresp. nucleic acid sequence; purified human SN-CNTF (Ih), its aminoacid sequence and corresp. nucleic acid (defined); sequence (defined); a recombinant animal cell expression system for producing biologically active CNTF; a bacterial cell expression system for producing biologically active CNTF; and purified recombinant CNTF.
