The shelving system, in particular a peripheral shelving system for books in a library has peripheral shelves and receptacles arranged therein for the books. In conventional peripheral shelving systems, the receptacles are constructed from containers for receiving in each case a multiplicity of books. The containers are situated in customary horizontal shelves. Consequently, a great effort of book movements is required to remove a single book. To reduce the removal time of a single book and to save energy at the same time in the movement of the peripheral shelving system, provision is made for the receptacles to be constructed as flat book supports 2 for accommodating individual books 3, lying flat, and for the shelves to be constructed as narrow, vertical shelf cases 1 which are open at least on one side and whose inside walls are provided with a large number of guide elements 4, arranged one above the other, for holding the book supports 2.
