- 1 -Abstract:The invention provides a method and composition forfertilizing soils to increase the amounts of phosphorusavailable for uptake by plants. The invention involvesintroducing an inoculum of the fungus Penicillium bilajiinto (or onto) the soil in combination with a manufacturedphosphorus fertilizer. The fungus has the effect ofincreasing the amount of phosphorus available for uptakefrom the manufactured fertilizer so that less of thefertilizer is required. The fungus is applied to the soilseparately from the fertilizer but can be added in prox-imity to, or in combination with, plant seeds. The inven-tion can be used to increase the phosphorus uptake ofplants which will increase growth rates and yields ofplants, especially crop plants grown on nutrient-deficientsoils.
