New erythroblastoid mouse cell lines expressing the src gene are strictly erythropoietin-dependent in respect of survival capacity and proliferation. This property makes these cell lines, in particular the cell line E 31, ECACC No. 900 322 11, suitable for assays for determining the biological activity of natural or recombinant erythropoietin. The proliferation of the cells is measured using an appropriate cell function and used to derive the concentration of biologically active erythropoietin.
