An apparatus allows easier to detect extremely low levels of light typically emitted by extremely small regions, such as single cells into single layers of culture, by means of a detector such as a CCD detector or an intensifier picture. The light sensor element is a fiber optic faceplate located between the light emitting material and the detector, without coming into contact with the light emitting material. When the latter is located on a surface such as a petri dish, the front plate is arranged between the box and the detector, with at least one air gap between the front plate and the detector.
