A nuclear power station with high-temperature reactor and steam generator, with the high-temperature reactor being located in a reactor pressure vessel of cast iron or cast steel, in particular of nodular cast iron, and the reactor pressure vessel being surrounded by an underground containment. This cavern containment has a cooling system for residual heat removal. Facing the reactor, the reactor pressure vessel is fitted with a number of essentially vertical convection ducts, open at top and bottom, spread over its circumference. The air present in the cavern rises up through these by convection, and falls again in an annulus between the outer wall of the reactor pressure vessel and the inner wall of the cavern containment.
