The underside of the container, or interchangeable load unit (5), is fitted with grip profiles (9). When the container is dropped onto the load surface the grips locate w.r.t. fixed grips (11) which prevent the load from slipping when the vehicle moves. No hinges or fasteners are required. The grips can be interlocking profiles, e.g. wedge shapes, or dovetailed shapes which are engaged by sliding the container into place. The container is lifted by external hoist or by on-board hoist.
