To change the shape and dimensions of material which has been quenched and tempered, case hardened or pptn. hardened, the amt. of force applied during heating is below the value which would be needed to bring the workpiece into the required shape and size through elastic and/or plastic distortion. Before or while stresses are applied to the workpiece, the forces imposed on it pref. apply only an elastic distortion to bring it into the required shape and dimension, which is less than 50% of the shaping force calculated for the tempering and drawing temp. Through the process, a component is stretched or compressed above or below its size, before heat treatment, and different forces are applied to various sections of the component in terms of value and direction. The workpiece is subjected to forces to bring it into the required contour during the tempering and drawing process. ADVANTAGE - The technique allows a workpiece to be given a major change in shape and size.
