To determine the level of abrasive wear on a component in a textile machine, where the yarn passes over it in constant contact and at a constant yarn tension, the amount of wear is continuously measured. The actual level of draw tension on the yarn is taken into account with every deviation from the mean draw tension, for the abrupt and short-term changes in terms of a few msec. to give the rises in yarn draw tension, by measurement and calculation. Pref., the actual level of the yarn draw tension contains the deviations from the mean value in a preset mathematical averaging, using the square root of the squared mean deviation integrated with time. Before the yarn reaches the contact component, its draw tension is smoothed to give no abrupt and short-term draw tension increases, and it passes to the component to be laid on it at a generally constant force and without looping at the feed side. ADVANTAGE - The method gives measured results which can be reproduced, with the lowest possible spread, to show the wear on the yarn feed component to prevent sudden and unplanned machine stoppages through a component failure.
