To provide a bar-shaped plant growth support for essentially soil-less hydroponic cultures, comprising a substrate wrapped in a packaging, which substrate on the one hand provides the possibility of operating these hydroponic cultures in the same manner as with the substrates known to date, but which, on the other hand, can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, it is proposed that the substrate has a basic material and that the basic material comprises plant fibres which have not become peaty and which are prepared by mechanical comminution and are provided, on their fibre surface, with a plant-growth-improving substance.
