A hydraulic shock-absorber (1) incorporates a damping force adjuster (7) driven by a stepping motor (2) subject to control unit (6) comprising a low-pass filter (60), an interface circuit (61), a digitiser (62), a memory (63) and a CPU (64) performing searches and arithmetic operations on inputs correspondence to weight, vertical acceleration and approximate vertical velocity. The neutral zone is set with the average value of acceleration of the unsprung mass as its midpoint, and shifted as required. ADVANTAGE - Ride comfort and directional stability are improved even where vehicle negotiates a curve or follows a zig-zag course.
