Deuterized 2,3,3-trihalogeno 2-fluoro 1-propanols of formula (I):DCX1X2-CFX3-CD2OR1 wherein X1, X2 and X3, which may be the same or different, represent a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, and R1 is a hydrogen or deuterium atom. These compounds can be prepared by means of a radical condensation of deuterized methanol on a tetrahalogenoethylene of formula CX1X2=CFX3, wherein X1, X2 and X3 have the above-mentioned meaning. They can be used to prepare deuterized fluoro-2 acrylic acid halides which are useful for manufacturing optical fibres.
