The analysis of an image of the field of observation from a thermal camera by bandings of n lines produces the appearance of streaks or "lining" in certain areas of the image, the set of these areas constituting a "lining space". The device for the implementation of the method comprises means (13, 13') for determining a basis of orthonormal H and V functions, generatrice of a vectorial space of functions whose values taken, at each point of the image, represent the values of luminance of all the types of lining, means (14, 14') for modelling the lining which the image exhibits by determining the coefficients of distribution of this lining on the base functions, means (15, 15') for synthesising the lining by determining the luminance values of the lining on the basis of the correlation coefficients and the values of the base functions, and finally means (16) for subtracting the luminance values of the synthesised lining from the luminance values of the initial image.
