By utilizing a twisted nematic liquid material in a Fabry- Perot etalon, an electronically turnable polarization-insensitive optical filter is realized. In particular, the twist imparted to the molecules of the liquid crystal material is established at n&pgr;/2, where n is a positive odd integer.
