PURPOSE:To accurately recognize a blank by deciding a blank size candidate in such a way that the distribution of a detected word length becomes nearest to the distribution of an actual English word length and assuming that the blank exists in a character interval exceeding the blank size candidate. CONSTITUTION:A word length detection processing 26 compares respective blank size candidates obtained by a blank size selection processing 25 with character interval data. The word length distributions when the blank is inserted into a place where the character interval is larger than the blank size candidate area prepared for respective blank sizes and they are outputted to a blank size decision processing 28. It collates word length data obtained by the word length detection processing 26 with a word length weight coefficient data base 27 for the respective blank character sizes, calculates the products of the appearing frequency and the weight coeffients of the respective word lengths, adds the respective products for the whole word lengths, sets them as the accumulated value of the blank size candidates, decides the blank size candidate where the accumulated value becomes the smallest to be the blank size and outputs it to a blank recognition processing 29.
