Gassing cell suspension in circulation reactor with minimal circulation power input - with liq. contents pumped through the reactor without dead zone prodn., and dosing reaction gas to give quasi-stationary bubble suspension
In the gassing of a cell suspension in a circulation reactor equipped with a propeller, the novelty is that (a) the liq. contents of the reactor are pumped through the reactor circuit without dead zone prodn. using the minimal mechanical power input; and (b) the reaction gas is dosed into the liq. such that a quasi-stationary bubble suspension zone is created and maintained in the inner tube of the reactor. Also claimed is a circulation reactor with a guide tube having an open internal cross-section which increases along at least part of the tube length, a propeller being located in the largest cross-section region. USE/ADVANTAGE - For injecting gas, e.g., oxygen, into a suspension of shear stress-sensitive microorganisms or cells, e.g., animal cells. The gas bubble dwell time is increased, dead zones are avoided and minimal power input is used for pumping, thus minimising cell destruction and foam formation.
