The monitoring device has two monitoring circuits each containing a relay providing a blocking signal when the internal resistance of the signal source coupled to a monitoring input (5a, 5b) lies outside a permissible range, to interrupt the relay current circuit. Each circuit has a periodic function test mode in which the circuit simulates a fault at the input of the other monitoring circuit and checks its response, to indicate a function fault and interrupt the supply current circuit of at least one relay.
