The formulae for calculating the safe external pressure which may be imposed on a thin walled cylinder without causing it to collapse, involve the cosine of an angle alpha, where alpha depends on the ratio of the dia. of the cylinder to its length. When alpha is greater than 90 deg. the value of its cosine becomes negative so that different formulae have to be used depending on whether alpha is less than, or geater than, 90 deg. The new formula avoids the use of the angle alpha and can be used for cylinders with the ratio D/1 which is less than or greater than unity. USE/ADVANTAGE - Design of thin walled cylinders subjected to external pressure. The formula is simpler than formulae at present in use.
