Fire extinguisher solns. for Class A fires, having an impregnating action. (1) The extinguisher soln. comprises an aq. soln. of K hydrogen tartrate or dipotassium tartrate at up to satn. concn., (2) the extinguisher medium contains carbonate and bicarbonate with monovalent cations at up to satn. concn. or H phosphate and dihydrogen phosphate with monovalent cations at up to satn. concn., (3) the extinguisher contains a suitable surfactant at up to satn. concn. but not more than 10 g/l, (4) the extinguisher compsn. contains up to 10 g/l benzoic acid or a salt of this or up to 10 g/l hydroxbenzoic acid or a salt of this as preservative and (5) the compsn. contains up to 10 g/l Na sulphite as antioxidant and fungicide. USE/ADVANTAGE - (1) and (2) improve the extinguishing action. (2) stabilises the pH of the extinguisher soln. (3) allows use of smaller concns. of surfactant. (4) and (5) preserve the soln. against microbial and fungal attack. (5) improves the corrosion inhibition of the extinguisher compsn. by inhibiting oxid
