Mfr. comprises casting of thin slab material, heating thin slab in a continuous furnace and finish rolling to hot wide strip with subsequent cooling and reeling, in successive stages. The removal of slag from the thin slab surface takes place directly after the strand emerges from the mould and before entry into the sec. cooling zone. Slag removal is pref. obtd. by medium pressure water spraying of both sides of the vertical strand at an angle between 0 and 90 deg. pref. 45 deg. transverse to the travel direction of the strand. Alternatively, slag removal is by mechanical means in conjunction with fluid media which flush the removed slag from the area between guide rollers and strand.
