The device has (i) n channels for (quasi-) simultaneous determn. of light intensity in a narrow wavelength regions, each channel having an arrangement of a wavelength region-defining interference filter (44,45), a detector (46,47) for converting light intensity into a proportional electrical signal and an amplifier circuit (48,49); (ii) a cylindrical or prismatic housing with a front end light entry opening in which the n channels are arranged side-by-side; and (iii) one or more display elements (31) associated with the channels. ADVANTAGE - The device allows rapid analysis of gas clouds esp. during fires, can be operated by unskilled personnel and can be used under adverse environmental conditions.
