The element is made of a support layer (11) with a cover layer (12) of natural straw (13). Each straw reed is embedded at one end in an anchoring layer (34) with its end at an acute angle to the support layer. The support layer (11) is pref. made of moisture resistant, flexible material e.g. bitumen, pref. with an embedded inlay e.g. coconut fibre or jute tissue. The layer (11) is coated with the anchoring layer, esp. bitumen and layers of natural straw, esp. china or reed grass connected together by a transverse adhesive strips (33) are embedded at one end into the bitumen. The straw may be sewn together instead of using adhesive strips. The support layer (11) has a border of approx. 10cm free from straw which overlaps adjacent covering elements. Appts. to produce the element has straw and substrate feeding appts. pressure rolls, sewing appts. and bitumen feeding nozzles. USE/ADVANTAGE - Economic to produce and easy to lay. Improves visual and architectural impression.
