Composite carbon@ material for use in electrodes - comprises glassy carbon matrix with carbon matrix with graphite crystals spatially arranged in direction to exhibit their inherent electrode reaction activity
C material (I) is composite of graphite and glassy C having structure in which graphite crystals are spatially-arranged in the glassy C matrix in a direction so that they display electrode activity inherent in the graphite crystals. (I) having max. pore dia. 150 A and impermeability to electrolytes substantially corresp. to that of glassy C. Prepn. of (I), comprising (a) dispersing fine graphite powder with sufficient crystal size in organic material (II) which, on calcining in inert or nonoxidising atmos., forms glassy, low-graphitising C (b) extruding compsn. from (a) in desired shape so that the graphite crystals are spatially arranged in extruder direction, then (c) calcining compsn. at high temp. in inert or non-oxidising atmos. to carbonise (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - For electrodes used in electrochemical detectors, sensors in environmental control and pathological investigations, and electrode probes, partic. to convey current and potential in biological systems. Electrodes are nonharmful and nontoxic to biological systems, even when remaining in situ, and to foodstuffs, inexpensive, permit detection of trace amts., have mechanical strength, measurements are reproducible, stable measurements of electrodes reactions are obtd. without special pretreatment.
