For the automatic preparation of packs of garments, the successively increasing pack thickness with each supplied garment is monitored and on exceeding the predetermined pack thickness the further supply of garments is interrupted and the pack thus formed is removed minus the last supplied garment. At the beginning of the work cycle with the first pack of the order the number or garments including the last supplied garment which then exceeds the required pack thickness is measured and stored and then the stored number of garments minus one is discharged. The garments are supplied on a downwardly inclined slide rod (7) by a supply mechanism (4). A light beam (L1) running across the slide rod can be provided in front of the retaining device at a distance therefrom which corresponds to the required pack thickness. The retaining device can be designed as a separating device (13) for the garments. USE - For an automated accurate assembly of required packs of garments.
