Method for determining the properties of a diesel oil consisting of a mixture, consisting in measuring with a near-infrared spectrophotometer the absorbence for a certain number of frequencies chosen in the spectral range from 12500 to 3840 cm-1 (0.8 to 2.6 microns) on the constituents or on arbitrary mixtures, and from a defined base line, in determining for each property and constituent a certain spectral mixing index (SMI) by applying a correlative relationship with the measured absorbence values DJ, this correlation being determined experimentally by multivariate regression, and in calculating the value of the property J required by applying a linear relationship J = faSMIJa + fbSMIJb + fcSMI J c ... + foSMIJo, in which each term is the product of the spectral mixing index (SMIa...) of the property J of a constituent (A ...) with the fraction by volume (fa ...) of this constituent.
