In a method for extracting phase errors caused by the atmosphere in the backscatter signal of a coherent radar imaging system, first consecutive azimuth spectra are formed over a predetermined period. A frequency deviation (DELTAF (t)) of the backscattering ratio component is then calculated, and the difference between the frequency offset and a desired value (DELTAFs oll) of the frequency offset is then double integrated. which one normalizes the result of the double integration by multiplying it by a constant (2PI / DELTAt) to thus obtain the phase error (phie (t)). / P
