PURPOSE: To provide a surface treatment method of V-belt contact face in a V-belt type continuously variable transmission allowing the friction coefficient of the V-belt contact face of a pulley to be set easily to the optimum value. ;CONSTITUTION: A V-belt type continuously variable transmission is formed by stretching a V-belt 7 between a drive side pulley 3 and a driven side pulley respectively having a fixed pulley 5 and a variable pulley 6 movable in the separating/approaching state in relation to the fixed pulley 5. In this case, surface treated layers 11 formed of material selected out of material with its hardness variable according to the heat treatment temperature are formed at the contact faces of the fixed pulley 5 and variable pulley 6 with the V-belt 7. Heat treatment is then applied to the surface treated layers 11 at such temperature as to obtain an optimum friction coefficient determined taking account of noise generated by the contact with the V-belt 7 and power transmission capacity by the V-belt 7.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
