PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for forming and setting the operational constitution of an interactive network substrate (substrate) connected with an LAN printer. ;CONSTITUTION: Constitution information is stored in an NVRAM(non volatile RAM) 228 by using a RAM 220, NVRAM 228, and PROM(programmable ROM) 222 provided at a substrate, and a loader module and plural constitution modules for setting the substrate in plural different operational constitutions are stored in the PROM 222 when the prescribed constitution module is constituted of different combinations. Also, this device is provided with a processor 216 which reads the constitution information from the NVRAM 228 to the RAM 220, and executes the loader module for providing a constitution mask corresponding to the constitution information. The processor 216 selects the constitution module matched with the constitution mask by applying the constitution mask to the constitution modules in the PROM 222. Then, the processor 216 copies the selected constitution module to the RAM 220, executes the constitution module, and sets the substrate in the operational constitution corresponding to the constitution information stored in the NVRAM 228.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
