To ascertain the state of fluctuation in the width of the material S to be rolled in the edger mill 3, the opening degree of roll of the edger mill 3 is preliminarily set at a prescribed value and the region of especially large fluctuation in the rolling load of this edger mill 3 is detected. And, tension between the stands is changed based on obtained information.
