PURPOSE: To enhance the wear resistance of hard coating layers constituting a cutting tool made of surface-coated cermet. ;CONSTITUTION: When plural hard coating layers of two or more among TiC, TiN, TiCN, TiCNO and Al2O3 are formed by chemical vapor deposition on the surface of a WC-based cemented carbide substrate or a TiCN-based cermet substrate to obtain a cutting tool made of surface-coated cermet, one or more of the hard coating layers except the first layer brought into contact with the surface of the substrate are made of TiCN and at least one of the TiCN layers is made of TiCN having the max. peak intensity at the (422) face in X-ray diffraction.
