A device for carrying out groundwork in deep water is provided with a frame which, in operation, extends to above the water level and, on its top side, bears a control chamber. At least three legs which are movably supported by the frame are provided with caterpillar tracks which can be driven parallel to one another. At least two legs extend sideways to outside the frame and can be pivoted about a horizontal axis under the control of control members. A method for laying a pipeline in the ground under water comprises making a small trench in the ground using a dredger which moves along the ground and using this device to pull the pipeline through the trench which has been made, which pipeline is welded together from pieces of pipe from a starting point. After the pipeline has been definitively positioned, the trench is filled in.
