The invention relates to a procedure for the production of mechanical pulp from a fibrous product. To improve the strength properties, the fibrous product is subjected to a chemical and/or enzymatic treatment in which a binding agent is linked with the lignin in the fibrous product. The bond between the binding agent and the fibre is created either by using oxidizing enzymes or oxidizing chemicals producing radicals.
