New support for catalyst and its preparation process, characterized by the presence of selected quantities of a compound containing magnesium soluble in a hydrocarbon, applied to the support according to the solvent, in which a uniformly and continuously wetted surface is obtained with the magnesium compound solvated in a state of incipient precipitation in order to allow the formation of a regular and continuous distribution of the magnesium compound on the support material to which it conforms. The drying process under these conditions effectively maintains the effective surface air and the pore volume of the material to a high degree. The support containing the adsorbed magnesium is then dried in a controlled manner under nascent humidity conditions ensuring a regular spatial distribution of the reticular magnesium values stacked at a level of between 1 and 5 molecular monolayers on the support. The invention also relates to a representative process for the polymerization or copolymerization of olefins providing stereospecific polymers such as propylene.
