For the prepn. of a sample through pyrolysis, for gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, infra-red rays are focussed by reflectors at the sample The pyrolysis appts. has a reaction chamber and an infra-red radiator, with a transparent wall between the sample in the chamber and the infra-red source. The infra-red focussing unit is a hollow cylindrical body with an elliptical cross section. A rod infra-red radiator is along one of the focus axes and the tubular reactor zone is along a second focus axis. Two parabolic cylinder reflectors are fitted, with the infra-red rod along the focus axis of one parabolic cylinder and the reactor zone along the focus axis of the second parabolic cylinder.
