A procedure for grading building site rubble first uses coarse crushing to reduce its size, followed by sieving into coarse, medium and fine sized pieces. The medium sized pieces are passed through a magnetic separator and a whirlpool air classifier, to extract some initial metal pieces. Then they pass to a vibrating classifier where they separate into light and heavy fractions. The light fraction is then subdivided into paper-containing, metal-containing and plastic-containing components using a baffle plate on which they rebound. The meal-containing components are separated from the paper-containing components by electrostatic separation. ADVANTAGE - Efficient separation of refuse into paper, metal and plastic based components.
