The testing method involves detecting a parameter influenced by adjusting a control element, which influences engine power, according to a defined change applied to the control system which adjusts the control element. The engine power is then influenced without the adjusting the control element, and then the control element is adjusted according to the change in engine power and the control function. The adjustment of the control element is then checked against the operating parameter or parameters. The power can be influenced by adjusting the ignition timing point according to a defined function. The operating parameters can be the engine speed and a measure of the engine load. USE/ADVANTAGE - For testing control element controlled by electronic control system in a motor vehicle. Testing is achieved without special operating phases or adverse effects on operating characteristics of vehicle.
