A helical scan recording process to magnetic tape has a drum unit having lower and upper sections (2,3) both of which are stationary. An air gap is formed between the fixed drum elements and the disc (9) on which the rotating heads (10,11) are mounted. The transmission of signals to and from the heads is made using upper and lower transmitter pairs (14,15 and 16,17). The lower drum is fixed to a main carrier (12) and the upper drum is mounted on a cross carrier (13) mounted on the main one such that adjustment may be made. The adjustment does not affect the signal transmitter. ADVANTAGE - Prevents variation in distance between fixed and movable components.
