In exchange operation on time multiplex lines for incoming transmission in time positions telephonic information delivered from time channels is cyclically printed into memory cells individually arranged in the time channels for a PCM word. Control is by means of control addresses supplied from a cyclically read out holding memory and freely selectively read out on multiplex lines for outgoing transmission. In test operation, the cyclical printing and recording of telephonic information is prevented and despite this, controlled by control addresses contained in a test address register (RADR). A test pattern contained in a test pattern register (RDTI) is freely printed into the memory cells of the information memory (SM) and, using the control addresses, is read out in an output register (RDTU), from which it is fed for comparison with a test pattern in the test pattern register (RDTI).
