A detection unit (2) works out the ratio of variations in the values of operating state variables for the formulation and memorisation of a mill characteristic model. Also memorised are the operational parameters, limits of these and of the state variables, and a performance index. A simplex-algorithm computer (5) within an optimising arithmetic control unit (3) computes variations of the operational parameters for optimisation of the index in conditions which satisfy the limits. A main controller (4) performs cascade control of separate speed, working fluid pressure, raw material feed rate and hot air supply. ADVANTAGE - Operates on actualised optimal model of mill which is independent of temporal variations of its working condition due to wear, etc..
